## The three conditions that make it work

A programmatic page set needs all three. Two out of three produces pages that get built, crawled once, and dropped.

**A real dataset.** Rows with attributes you either own or can assemble credibly. Zapier has 8,000+ app integrations with their own trigger and action metadata. G2 has review volume and category taxonomy. If your "dataset" is a list of city names crossed with your product category, you do not have one.

**Genuine per page variance.** Each page has to say something its siblings do not. Different numbers, different screenshots, different setup steps. Swapping a product name into eleven identical sentences is not variance, and it is the failure mode Google's duplicate handling catches first.

**Existing tail demand.** Somebody is already typing the query pattern. Not necessarily at volume any keyword tool reports per URL, but the pattern must exist. "[Tool] Slack integration" gets searched. "Best [category] for left-handed accountants in Bristol" does not.

Programmatic SEO without proprietary data is duplication at scale. If the only thing distinguishing your 400 pages is a variable in an H1, you have built a maintenance burden that will be pruned in twelve months. The dataset is the moat. The template is just plumbing.

## Two SaaS examples worth studying

**Zapier's integration pages.** One page per app pairing, populated from Zapier's own connector metadata: available triggers, available actions, and the specific automations people build between those two tools. **G2's category pages.** One page per software category, driven by review counts, satisfaction scores and the grid position each vendor occupies. The pages rank for "best [category] software" because the underlying review corpus cannot be replicated by writing prose. The template is almost beside the point.

Google's spam policies name scaled content abuse: generating many pages primarily for search rankings rather than to help people, regardless of how they were produced. The practical test to apply before you build: if a reader landed on one of these pages from search, would they get their answer faster here than anywhere else? If the honest answer is no, the template is not adding anything and the set will not survive an update cycle.
